Art Prize Description

Detroit Forsaken

These are not the ruins of Rome, nor the tombs of Egypt. While the echoes of the past resonate, this community is extinguishing in the present. This is a story about things left behind painted with a heavy heart by dim and murky light. This is the time of death of the American Industrial Revolution. Few cities have had more influence on the growth of a civilization. Few cities have so rapidly fallen from grace. As an economic bellwether, she now lives a cautionary tale for all those great cities that danced to Motown’s lead, and are most likely doomed to follow in her footsteps. What remains is a drained and evaporated cityscape - one that is haunting, seductive and alive with ghosts.

Grace

Grace Karekezi Mwemere, the subject of this piece is a friend from Rwanda. During the 1994 Rwandan genocide Grace was 16 years old. She was captured, separated from her family, tortured, beat, yet she miraculously escaped death. Due to the anger and hate she experienced, Grace lost her smile in the ensuing years. However, the story does not end there. Through wise counsel, her anger transformed into forgiveness and blessings toward her captors. I am moved by my friend’s story. Out of her horrific experience something beautiful happened as Grace came to fully embody her name, share her story and regained her smile.

Grace’s story is a story of transformation. Out of chaos came order and then beauty. My work seeks to do the same. Transforming the ordinary into something more, uncovering the potential in unexpected things.

Art Prize Description

The Grand Pixel

My work entitled, "The Grand Pixel" is a large 8ft tall by 16ft wide mosaic of downtown Grand Rapids highlighting the river and cityscape. It is made out of 250,920 tiny 6mm plastic colored balls and uses only 6 colors. From afar the Grand Rapids scene appears photographic but as one approaches the individual balls of color emerge as in the pointillist tradition. I started creating these mosaics as an undergrad student at Kendall College of Art and Design where I graduated in 2006. This mosaic needs to be displayed in a large open space where audiences are able to view from a distance as well as get up close enough to touch. Viewers are amazed by the detail achieved from such a limited palette and the sheer number of plastic colored balls used. This mosaic will be 4 – 8ft tall by 4ft wide panels that go together seamlessly against the wall. It is impressive by the way it overwhelms with it's size yet still feels intimate as people want to get close to figure out how it works.
